Our Deer Safari
Have you all seen the amazing electic buggies that we have at our Deer Park? As we are...
We have often been asked why we have different names for our large male deer. We are here to explain it to you.
If you spot a family of deer in the woods, the male is the one with the antlers. Female deer do not have antlers at all. The only exception to this is the Reindeer, the female reindeer have smaller antlers than the male.
There are different terms for male deer, depending on the species, and stag usually describes the largest types of deer. In our park we have the stunning Red Deer stags. The red deer (Cervus elaphus) is one of the largest deer species. A male red deer is called a stag (or hart for the more poetic of us), and a female is called a doe or hind. The term hind is more specific when you talk about red deer.
The Buck can be used more broadly for male deer of various species. For example, male fallow deer, roe deer, and some other species are referred to as bucks.
